Reflection
Portraiture is my favorite form of photography. Although I usually feel uncomfortable posing and working with others to create a shot, when an image captures exactly what it needed to, it is an indescribable feeling. I love being able to convey emotion or personality through a shot is so exciting. I normally gravitate toward candid shots that capture deep emotions of those included. This often means the laughter of friends and family as they bustle around an event or prepare for a gathering.
The shots in this assignment are from two shoots. The first was one I completed at my mom’s condo on December 4th, 2023. I shot this as a part of this portrait assignment and as a part of the first iteration of my narrative assignment. I moved through her condo creating images of the objects I was so used to see throughout my childhood home, brought with her when she moved to the smaller space. As soon as I saw the light shining in through the window of her reading nook, I knew I wanted to create a portrait of my mom there in front of her stained glass.
The second shoot happened the day before one of my oldest friends got married. We were in her childhood home creating centerpieces from cut flowers for her reception and I brought my camera to document the day for her. I started shooting and really enjoyed the contrast lighting coming in through the blinds contrasted with the soft petals covering the tables.
While most of my personal work consists of environmental portraits and documentary-type scenes, I would like to experiment more with weaving posed portraits into my sequences. I think this course as a whole has challenged me to view my world differently and begin to image how different forms of photography can work together to create a whole narrative.
