Reflection

As I prepared to shoot this assignment, I could feel my anxiety rising and I began to dread completing it. I am comfortable shooting found items with natural light - seeking out unique lighting situations that occur by chance. Setting up lighting of my own has never come instinctively to me. I was unsure if I could accomplish the goals I set for myself in this assignment. However, after gathering my materials and learning more about my specific camera settings, my anxiety dissipated as I began shooting. I think what really helped me move past my initial trepidation was Leonie's note that we could take multiple exposures until the image was correct. This reaffirmed to me that mistakes do not need to be permanent in this setting and we have the ability to redo and readjust in the home studio we set up.
In considering what I wanted to shoot for this assignment, I decided on a cut orange, a dollop of icing, a tea cup, and some cake crumbles. Looking at the different examples and considering what I had accessible, my ultimate goal was to create images similar to renaissance still life paintings, adding a whimsical element with the contrasting orange and purple of the teacup and the few sprinkles hanging on to the icing.
While I found this assignment on of the most challenging we have had thus far, I appreciated the encouragement to think deeply about what objects I am choosing to shoot and the practice of building a studio of found items. I felt a sense of accomplishment looking back on my images and seeing how the different lighting situations changed the tone of each image. I am submitting this assignment with a better understanding of how I can use light in the future to better communicate emotions and to continue a narrative. The hardest and most rewarding image I created was that made by light painting and I am looking forward to continuing to practice this method.
I have included this last image because I enjoyed how the green tint added to the absurdness of the overall scene. I was using tissue paper to diffuse my light and tried a white piece with a green piece as an experiment. The result reminded me a of film still and I loved the idea of the green lighting further obscuring my renaissance scene, adding to the modern feel of the bright orange, purple floral pattern, and the artificially colored sprinkles.
